Thousands expected on National Mall for Jubilee of Prayer, GW commencement

Around 15,00 people are expected on the National Mall Sunday for two major events: George Washington University will hold its commencement ceremony near the Washington Monument and the first major event of America250 kicks off down near 12th Street.

The scale of the stage and production for the Jubilee of Prayer is breathtaking — the stage is built to look like the inside of a church or cathedral with massive, concert and festival-sized video screens.

Gates open for the Jubilee of Prayer at 9:30a.m. Sunday, but people were already gathering near the stage Saturday to check it out.

“It says that there are people that care about our nation who want to pray and come together, and even if there are some different opinions on things that we trust God and we believe in God, and I think yeah, that does speak to me,” said Alli Vazquez, who came from California.

The event is free, and it will also be live-streamed through partner churches and ministries. This event is being organized by the White House and the prayer event’s lineup features mostly Christian speakers.

With the amount of people expected to attend, that means major impacts to traffic and parking down along the National Mall.

“Expect the wide security perimeter and traffic closures. Closures around the Rededicate 250 event on Sunday will be along 7th and 12th Streets and the roads around the National Mall,” said Interim Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffrey Carroll. “ This event also coincides with George Washington University’s commencement ceremony, taking place on the grounds of the Washington Monument between 15th and 17th Streets. I recommend anyone planning on coming to the area of the National Mall this Sunday to use mass transit.”
