A 25-year-old woman was killed and her husband is in grave condition after a chain-reaction bus crash early Friday on I-95 in Stafford, Virginia.
Priscilla Ramos Mafalda was in an SUV when investigators say a bus failed to slow down for a work zone and smashed into several cars. The Worcester, Massachusetts, resident was killed, along with a family of four, also from Massachusetts.
Ramos was a bright light, her grieving friends and family members said.
“Today, we say goodbye to someone very special, but we will never say goodbye to the memories and love she left in our hearts,” a cousin, Ivan Ramos, told News4 in a statement. “Priscilla was a light in the lives of many people. With her beautiful smile and contagious joy, she had the gift of turning simple moments into unforgettable memories.”
“Priscilla was a young woman with so many dreams and plans for her future,” said her former employer, Monique Almeida. “She was sweet, kind, hardworking, and had a heart bigger than words can describe.”
A National Transportation Safety Board team remains in Stafford to investigate. They said bus operator Jing Dong was driving at a “high rate of speed” but didn’t know yet exactly how fast he was going.
Dong was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. He remained hospitalized and had not appeared in court as of Monday evening.
Dong was due in court Tuesday for driving 72 in a 50 mph zone in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in March. State police said he had passengers on board at the time. The bus company, based in North Carolina, had no comment.
More than three dozen people were hurt in the crash Friday. Three people remain hospitalized with serious injuries.
