Mayor Bowser presents key to the city to media mogul Cathy Hughes

Media mogul and local D.C. legend Cathy Hughes received her very own key to the city Wednesday.

Among her many accomplishments, she created a radio format known as the Quiet Storm, where instead of louder, upbeat programming at night, smooth R&B and jazz is played.

“These are the people who make us the largest Black-owned media company in the United States,” Hughes said, accepting the key.

Sycamore & Oak in Southeast D.C. was filled to the brim Wednesday night with people celebrating a true role model in the city — somebody who’s been paying it forward for half a century.

“In the words of Mayor Bowser, [Hughes] gave me my fair shot, my first shot in media, many years ago,” said LaToya Foster, director of the D.C. Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment. “Just look at her as a living example of what is possible. That one radio station started right here in Washington, D.C. that she and her son, Alfred, grew into the media empire that we now know as Urban One — nearly 60 radio stations across this country, two cable cable networks.”

Hughes told News4 she and her son literally in a radio station in D.C. while going through some tough times.

“1680 Wisconsin Ave. I lived there for two years,” she said.

Fast-forward to today — decades later — she reflected on what it was like to get a key to the nation’s capital?

“It’s the most incredible experience,” she said. “Number one, Mayor Bowser did not give them out generously — that’s very significant that she would think that a little country girl from Omaha, Nebraska has made an impact worthy. She only has a few months left, and yet, as she thinks through what she didn’t get accomplished, she recognized the fact that perhaps I need to give Cathy something before I leave out of here.”

This isn’t an honor given out to just anybody. In recent years, Alex Ovechkin was presented with one and Dave Chappelle, too. But Wednesday, the party was all about Cathy Hughes.
