School Board approves boundary for Skyview High in Herndon

The Fairfax County School Board unanimously approved the boundary for the new high school in Herndon as parents and students looked on to learn if their neighborhoods will see change.

Fairfax County Public Schools bought the campus of the former King Abdullah Academy last year for $150 million and positioned Skyview High School as a startup-style innovation hub with emphasis on aerospace, technology and future-facing academic tracks. It will draw students from high schools in the western part of the county.

“I am asking you to please keep Chantilly High School as our assigned high school for our community,” one speaker said.

FCPS made a recommendation for phasing in Skyview:

  • Year One (2026-27) makes Skyview home to ninth and tenth graders, all of whom would opt-in from high schools in the western part of the county.
  • In Year Two, all ninth graders would come from within the Skyview boundary, but students would have the option to opt out and attend their former high school.
  • Year Three, all students would be in-boundary and there would be no opt out, but students could still transfer.

Many are concerned about transportation, which may not be guaranteed for those who opt out of Skyview.

“Twenty-eight is crazy,” one parent told News4. “I, as a parent, driving, I’m scared to drive on 28. Imagine my kids crossing that highway to get home or walking to get home.”

The boundary changes would also affect some middle schools.
