Jane Howell, the former Virginia state senator who served for more than three decades, has died at 82.
Howell was elected to the Senate in Virginia in 1991. She represented the 32nd district in Fairfax County and part of Arlington County before retiring in 2024.
Howell was also the first woman in Virginia’s history to serve as chair of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee.
Social media tributes poured in Sunday from Virginia lawmakers.
Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi posted on X about her passing, saying Howell was a “deeply committed public servant” and “a strong voice on the issues that impact our communities.”
Hashmi also said Howell was a mentor to many women, including herself.
Both former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Sen. Tim Kaine also paid tribute to Howell, highlighting her accomplishments while in office. They both noted her committment to issues like public education, health care and women’s rights.
