Virginia congressmen announce investigation into ‘ICE brutality'

Democratic congressmen from Northern Virginia announced an investigation into recent encounters people had with Immigration and Customs Enforcement that the lawmakers call “ICE brutality.”

U.S. Rep. Don Beyer said his office confirmed at least four of what he calls unjustified, violent encounters with ICE agents just within the past two weeks.

He and U.S. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam introduced the investigation, saying the agents involved should be fired and potentially prosecuted.

“We are announcing an investigation into ICE’s misconduct in partnership with Reps. Subramanyam and [James] Walkinshaw [D-Va.], but also with the Democratic leaders of the Judiciary Committee, the Oversight Committee, and the Homeland Security Committee,” Beyer said.

On Aug. 10, an ICE agent pulled his gun on a U.S. citizen in Falls Church while the two argued through her driver side window. Without evidence, the Department of Homeland Security accused Carolina Molina of trying to run the agents over.

Molina joined the congressmen on Capitol Hill Wednesday.

“They should not be in the position that they are as of now if other citizens and other people are at risk,” she said.

In Arlington County the next day, 45-year-old Jose Mejia says ICE agents used a taser on him and assaulted him during an arrest.

DHS says Mejia is in the country illegally and accused him of attempting to flee the scene, requiring agents to use “necessary force to gain control of the situation.”

According to Mejia’s attorney, the violent arrest resulted in injuries to Mejia’s face and bleeding and swelling of his brain.

Arlington County’s prosecutor said she instructed local police and Virginia’s attorney general to investigate the incident involving Mejia, saying no one is above the law.
