Rain and wet snow are headed for the D.C. area on Sunday — likely affecting roads and leading to some school delays and closures on Monday, Storm Team4 says.
The rain is expected to move in early Sunday morning and mix with wet snow to create a slushy-like consistency, Storm Team4 Meteorologist Amelia Draper said.
This snow won’t be anything like the storm in January that coated the region in snow and sleet, some of which hasn’t completely melted weeks later.
That said, Sunday will be nasty with cold rain and wet snow throughout the day.
Temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-30s during the day so the snow won’t stick in the daytime.
But as the sun sets and temperatures drop Sunday night, any rain and snow mixture changes over to just snow, which will stick to the ground.
Snowfall is expected to end by about 6 to 9 a.m. Monday.
How much snow will we get in the D.C. area Sunday and Monday?
The forecast for this Sunday’s snow totals is a tricky one, but Storm Team4 is getting a clearer picture of how much we can expect.
Most areas in the D.C. metro region and Southern Maryland will get about 2 to 6 inches of snow, Draper said. Areas farther south and west will likely get 1 to 3 inches.

Will Sunday’s snow lead to school delays and closures?
“This isn’t going to be a major storm but it is going to have minor to moderate impacts on your Sunday night, Monday maybe even on into Tuesday,” Draper said.
Some slush is expected on the roads Sunday night and early Monday morning.
Draper said she does expect there to be school delays and cancelations on Monday. There could be some delays on Tuesday, but closings are unlikely as this snow is expected to melt much quicker than the last snowfall.
