A man accused in a rampage of shootings and carjackings in Prince George’s County is facing more than 60 charges, including attempted murder.
Larry Simpson, 68, made his first court appearance for a bond review Monday.
He faces more than 60 charges, including attempted murder.
Police say Simpson’s shooting spree on Friday began in College Park, continued into Riverdale and ended in Greenbelt.
Along the way, they say an off duty police officer followed Simpson, reporting his location to the off-duty officer’s wife, who is also a police officer.
Prosecutors say Simpson fired shots in six different locations and shot one man after crashing and flipping over his car at 67th Avenue and Patterson Street in Riverdale.
Police recovered an AR-15 style rifle when they took Simpson into custody.
He waived his right to a bond review in court and will stay in jail without bond. His next hearing is scheduled for June.
Court records confirm Simpson was sentenced in 1987 for a murder during a robbery in Beltsville, Maryland and was released after completing a drug treatment program in 2023.
His sentence was modified to time served and one year of unsupervised probation. The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office says it is looking into the circumstances surrounding his release.
“I cannot at this point opine on whether or not it was appropriate or not, but it is concerning because of course he’s on the streets and he’s committed such a horrendous act,” said State’s Attorney Tara Jackson.
