1 dead in Southwest DC apartment building fire; arson investigation underway

One person died and others were hurt and displaced from their homes after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Southwest D.C. early Tuesday, authorities say. An arson investigation is underway.

The fire broke out in an apartment on the 8th floor of a 10-story building in the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SW and then spread to neighboring homes, D.C. Fire and EMS said.

Video shows flames leaping from a home and heavy smoke pouring out.

A firefighter and three adults were taken to hospitals with injuries that all initially were described as non-life-threatening.

The name of the person who died was not immediately released.

Nine adults, two children, two dogs and a cat were displaced. Residents are being assisted by the Red Cross and D.C.’s Office of Community Relations and Services.

An investigation is underway by the Arson Task Force, which is made up of DC Fire and EMS, the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
